Greenboard drywall is a moisture-resistant building material that is used in kitchens, bathroom and laundry rooms -- places where water vapor and moisture can accumulate. Because of its specific gypsum content, greenboard reduces the growth of mold and mildew in these areas. Like other wall materials, greenboard may require spackling to fill holes, cracks or damage; however, because of its special properties, greenboard requires a slightly different procedure in order to successfully remove the overlying tile and then apply the spackle.
Instructions
1. Apply grout remover to the tiles over the damaged greenboard and remove using the putty knife. Set the tiles aside.
2. Wipe the greenboard with the damp cloth and carefully slice through the protective paper, using the utility knife, peeling it back to expose the damaged area of the gypsum.
3. Wipe the damaged area with the damp cloth to clear off dust and drywall flakes.
4. Stir the moisture-resistant spackle with a chopstick and apply it, using the putty knife, over the greenboard damage. Press spackle into the hole and smooth the spackle over the edges of the damage so it is as flush with the surface of the greenboard as possible.
5. Allow the spackle to dry overnight.
6. Put on the respirator mask and lightly sand the dried spackle to smooth the area.
7. Squeeze a small amount of wallpaper adhesive onto the grout and press the peeled paper coating back down over the repair. Allow it to dry for two hours.
8. Reapply the tiles over the repaired area using tile mastic and grout.
