Doubling up on drywall can reduce noise transmission.
Noise travels from room to room but is somewhat reduced by wall thickness. Doubling up on drywall panel installation is one method homeowners can use to reduce noise transmission, but drywall is heavy and it adds to the weight on the load-bearing structure of your home, so it is usually limited to certain rooms, like home theaters, bathrooms or master suites. "Sheetrock" is a brand name of drywall panel, manufactured by USG Corporation in Canada and distributed widely in the United States. Using double drywall will make your wall thicker.
Instructions
1. Install the first layer of Sheetrock panels. Rock the ceiling first and then the walls, keeping joints tight and attaching the panels to the studs with drywall screws at 8-inch intervals.
2. Install 1-inch-by-2-inch boards on the walls and the ceiling, directly over the studs. Position the 2-inch side of the board flat against the Sheetrock and use screws long enough to pass through the Sheetrock panel and into the studs or joists. The boards should be as long as the studs beneath them are.
3. Add one board for every stud on the wall or ceiling. This is called "furring out" and it creates a small airspace between the two layers of Sheetrock panels to reduce noise transmission.
4. Install the second layer of Sheetrock over the furring strips. This is your finish layer, so make sure joints are tight to reduce taping.
5. Finish your wall by taping and painting, or apply drywall texture or wallpaper.
