Clouds make a whimsical addition to a room's decor.
Although murals themselves are not that common, clouds are a common theme to paint on a wall because their irregular shapes make them simple to reproduce realistically--it's difficult to get a cloud wrong. For this reason, clouds are something that nearly everyone can paint with confidence, and they add a touch of whimsy and airiness to a room. Not all rooms look right with murals on the ceiling, but under the right circumstances, clouds make a fitting and attractive addition to a room's decor.
Sponges
Sponges make great instruments for painting clouds on the walls. Clouds have a puffy, airy quality that is well reproduced by dabbing the sponge into the paint color of the clouds and then dabbing the sponges lightly on the wall. Additionally, paint brushes may be used to solidify and clarify the edges of each cloud.
Colors
Although clouds are traditionally white and the sky is usually blue, deviations from this practice are acceptable and often more interesting. For example, the clouds may be lined with a light pink or warm yellow color that gives the impression that somewhere the sun is shining on the clouds. These colors may also be used to accent colors found elsewhere in the room. In addition, the blue of the sky may vary. Some brave decorators may even wish to try painting the sky a different color altogether--sea green or yellow or some other delicate color.
Cloud Patterns
Clouds may be applied to the ceiling at random for a realistic approach, or they may be painted on in a pattern, repeating the same one or two cloud shapes over and over again, for a cartoon-y appearance. If you're striving for realism in your painting, studying pictures of actual clouds will inform your choices as you paint.
Other Designs
Birds, a sun, an airplane and even a rainbow may be seen among the clouds. Adding small details such as this to your mural will add visual interest. Especially if the clouds have been painted in a child's bedroom, the variations on the theme is likely to be appreciated by the occupant.
