Gypsum For Your Lawn

Gypsum improves clay soils and drainage.

Gypsum is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined from the earth and ground up into a powder or granular form. It is used in gardens and lawns to improve tightly compacted clay soil by loosening it up. Gypsum can also be applied to established lawns without damaging the blades. The process of incorporating gypsum into the soil takes more than one growing season, but results in a more lush lawn and eliminates soggy areas by improving drainage.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and the width of the lawn using a tape measure and then multiple the two numbers together to arrive at the square footage of the lawn. You will need 40 lbs. of gypsum granules for every 1000 square foot of lawn. Gypsum typically comes in 50 to 80 lb. bags at garden centers and home supply stores.

2. Fill a fertilizer spreader with the gypsum granules and open the hopper to begin releasing the granules onto the lawn. Push the fertilizer spreader over the lawn in side-by-side rows until the lawn is covered and no more gypsum remains in the spreader.

3. Water the soil to a 3-inch depth using a garden hose or with sprinklers if available.

4. Repeat the application of gypsum annually for three consecutive years.
