The mineral azurite derives its name from its deep blue coloration. Because of the presence of copper, its highly desired hues have been used for centuries in jewelry and as a dye for paints and fabrics. Located in areas throughout the world, this beautiful mineral is often found alongside deposits of copper. In some areas, just a keen eye is required to spot small pieces scattered on the ground. If searching a rocky wilderness isn't for you, attending a gem and mineral show or purchasing the mineral from a local dealer is probably your best bet.
Instructions
1. Go to an area known for azurite deposits, such as sections of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Tour groups with access to mines, such as Blue Crystal Mines, just outside of Moab, Utah, are organized at some sites and offer time to search for azurite.
2. Contact the local Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management in areas that have recently been excavated for construction, for help finding locations to search for azurite. Ask permission to go to the sites. You can also contact the local gem and mineral society to help you gather the information you need for your trip.
3. Research the laws on collecting fossils and archaeological artifacts in the areas you have identified as likely places to find azurite. Most of the areas managed by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management are open to collectors "except for areas under active mining claims," according to the agency, and places like national parks. Organizing or attending a group excursion with other local enthusiasts, who are more likely to know the rules, is a good idea for those who are new to the activity.
