Cut Gypsum Board

Gypsum board is easily cut using a utility knife.

Cutting gypsum board or Sheetrock as it is often called can be an intimidating task to take on. The large boards are often bulky and awkward to maneuver. If you are not very familiar with properly cut gypsum board, chances are you may make a mistake that could end up costing you more time and money. But by following a few simple steps, you can successfully cut through gypsum board.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with the building codes for your geographical area as well as anything that may specifically pertain to your individual project. Some areas require special types of gypsum board that are resistant to mold or are a particular thickness, so first research which type of gypsum board is best for your particular situation and purchase enough for your project.

2. Measure the dimensions of gypsum board you will need for your project and place some light pencil marks directly on the board as a guide. Double and triple check your measurements.

3. Connect your guide marks with a straight line. If your guide marks are far apart, the easiest way to do this is by using a chalk line. Another method would be to use a T-square or to use a long level as a template for drawing

4. Use the utility knife to cut along the pencil lines, applying enough pressure to cut through the thick paper backing. Then swiftly break through the layer of gypsum underneath. The paper backing on the opposite side of the board should still be intact and holding the pieces of the board together.

5. Flip the gypsum board over to the opposite side. Grab the sides of the board and bend the board toward you along the paper backing that is still left to cut.

6. Use the crease in the board as a guide for your knife and cut through the remaining paper backing.
