Roof leaks cause water stains on drywall.
Water stains on drywall are most often the result of roof or plumbing leaks. The water runs downward into the home and creates a stain on the ceiling or walls made of drywall material. In addition, if the leak is caused by a damaged roof, the stain is often a dark color since the rain water brings in dirt from the outside. Removing water stain discoloration from drywall can be accomplished using basic household cleaning supplies.
Instructions
1. Put on rubber gloves and eyewear to protect against back splash from the bleach.
2. Open a plastic tarp and cover the area of floor below the stain. This prevents the cleaning solution from spilling onto the floor and bleaching it.
3. Fill a bucket with 1/2 gallon of water and 1/2 gallon of bleach. Mix the contents of the bucket with a spoon, or your gloved hand, to combine the liquids.
4. Insert a sponge into the bucket to absorb the bleach mixture. Squeeze out as much of the mixture as possible from the sponge.
5. Place the sponge on top of the water stained drywall. Rub the sponge over the stain to completely moisten it, extending the cleaning area at least 1 to 2 inches out from the perimeter of the stain. Continue scrubbing until you have covered the entire stain.
6. Allow the dry wall to completely air dry and examine the area for evidence of a stain. If the stain is still present repeat the cleaning process.
7. Open a can of primer and pour it into a paint tray. Dip a paint roller into the paint tray and apply the primer to the entire wall or ceiling that contained the water stain. Allow the primer to dry over night.
8. Paint the drywall with the paint of your choice using the same method used to apply the primer.
