Nevada is a desert state that is home to large amounts of valuable natural resources. Many different metals, including precious ones, are mined there and a diverse ecosystem allows both tourism and agriculture to thrive. Because of the dry climate, water is an important resource that is gathered into manmade lakes to provide hydroelectric power and supplies for drinking and farming.
Water
Lake Tahoe and the Colorado river both provide Nevada with invaluable water. In the west, Lake Tahoe supports a diverse tourism industry through all seasons. Along the Arizona border, the Hoover Dam produces electricity and has its own tourism industry along Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.
Agriculture
Although most of Nevada is too dry for farming without irrigation, the state's plateaus are ideal for cattle grazing and ranching. Wool from sheep and beef from cows are available for export along with excess hay and cattle feed.
Precious Metal
Nevada accounts for about three quarters of all gold production in the United States. It also has large amounts of silver. With the lure of riches through gold mining, people have been searching for gold deposits in Nevada since the 1800s. Less valuable metals, such as copper, are also mined in Nevada.
Other Resources
Although metals make up the bulk of Nevada's mineral resources, industrial materials like limestone and gypsum are also mined for export to other states along with scattered oil, salt and sand and gravel deposits. Nevada also has the highest solar potential in the United States with over 250 days of sunshine every year, and produces the most solar energy per capita.
