Diy Wireless Home Security Alarm

Protecting your home is invaluable since it likely contains the things and people you prize most of all. Whether you live in an apartment, condominium or house, a wireless alarm system is fairly easy to install. If you can program your TV, DVD player, remote controls or other simple devices, you should have no problem installing your own wireless alarm system.

Instructions

1. Decide where you want the sensors so you know how many and what kind you need. For example, you should have door and window sensors for any access point. Motion sensors are usually used in larger spaces, such as living rooms, where an intruder would pass or linger to get your valuables. When you know which components you need and how many, purchase your system.

2. Choose where to install your control panel. This should be an accessible place where you will see the panel frequently. It should also be near a phone and power outlet, preferably not one that the TV uses, as it could interfere with your television. Make sure there is no light switch controlling the power outlet, to avoid accidentally turning it off.

3. Before installing the control panel, put the other sensors and components where you plan on installing them. Test to make sure they are in range and working properly. To do this, insert the backup battery into the panel, plug it into the wall, and plug it into the phone jack using the supplied cord. If everything works, screw the control panel into place. If not, try moving the sensors around, a few inches or feet where possible, or try moving the control panel. Check the manufacturer's guidelines for acceptable ranges.

4. Install your window and door sensors. These usually come in three parts. The sensors is installed with screws and/or drywall anchors. A small wire will go to the transmitter attached to the outer edge of the door or window. The magnetic switch will line up with the transmitter; the two parts connect when the door or window is shut. If your alarm system gives the option of selecting "usually open" or "usually closed," choose "usually closed" for better protection.

5. Install your motion sensor approximately six to seven feet above the floor. Place it where anyone entering the room would pass it, not move towards it. Before installing the sensor, install the battery and assign a zone that corresponds with your control panel. Screw the sensor into place and test it. If it is too sensitive, adjust the sensitivity levels according to the manufacturer's guidelines until you find the right one for your household. For example, roaming pets may set off the alarm if it is too sensitive.
