Estimate Drywall

Estimate Drywall

Estimating Drywall and or the total square foot of drywall needed for a home or building can be done in a few simple steps. This article will cover the basics to estimating drywall for ceilings and walls.

Instructions

1. It is best to use a floor plan/blueprint of the building or hand draw one out to the measurements of the perimeters. Then figure out the different kinds [Water Resistant Drywall for bathrooms] and sizes of drywall [ceiling thicker then wall?] needed for the project.

2. Estimating ceiling drywall, This can be done using the floor SQFT of the living area being drywalled. Example: a 20'x20' room would have 400 SQFT of ceiling area. Then take the size of the drywall being used [standard is 4'x8'] and multiply the length times width [4x8={32}] to divide it by the ceiling SQFT to come up with a number for the amount of sheets of drywall needed to cover the ceilings total area.

3. Estimating drywall for interior walls, First note: [the drawing showing two ways of running drywall on the walls both will give you the same number when doing the estimate just one way will end up taking more time, work and materials to finish.] To estimate walls just take length times height then divide by the SQFT number of the drywall being used {32}, you should figure the SQFT of each wall one at a time. Before you divide the SQFT number by {32} to get a sheeting count you must take any window or door SQFT off the total for each wall being figured. Take length times height then [if there was a door and window] add the total SQFT together. Next subtract it from the total SQFT number of the wall then divide it by the SQFT of the sheeting {32} to get a number of sheets of drywall for each wall. After all walls are figured add the material together for each kind/size that's it.
