Whitewash gives walls a subtle, traditional appearance.
Whitewash traditionally was an inexpensive substitute for paint on homes, barns and other structures. You also can apply it to trees to prevent sunscald. The main ingredients of whitewash are lime, salt and water. To apply whitewash, you brush it on with a paintbrush and wait for it to dry. Whitewash also has anti-microbial properties. Whitewash can help give your outdoor project an old-fashioned, country look. You can make your own whitewash easily and inexpensively.
Instructions
1. Lay a plastic drop cloth on the ground to contain the mixing mess.
2. Pour 50 pounds of hydrated lime into the trough. Use hydrated lime, not dolomite lime. Dolomite, also called "aglime" is gray in color and not suitable for whitewashing. You can buy hydrated lime at masonry supply stores and agricultural supply stores. It is also known as calcium hydroxide.
3. Add 6 gallons of water, gradually mixing it into the lime.
4. Dissolve 15 pounds of salt in 5 gallons of water. Combine with the lime paste, mixing thoroughly.
5. Add additional water to thin the mixture to the right consistency. To thicken, add a small amount of lime, mix and allow the lime to soak in properly before using the whitewash. The whitewash mixture should be a thin consistency, not as thick as paint.
6. Mixing water and lime releases heat. Wait for the mixture to cool before you apply it.
