Bath Towels vs. Bath Sheets
Bath towels were first widely used in the 19th century. Early towels were small and usually made of linen and quite expensive. After the Industrial Revolution they became much cheaper to produce, and were therefore more available.
Today bath towels come in a variety of sizes and materials; larger ones are known as bath sheets.
Function
The function of both bath towels and bath sheets is the same. They are both basically meant to dry the human body.
Size
Bath towels come in standard sizes of 27 inches by 52 inches to 30 inches by 58 inches. The average size of a bath sheet is 35 inches by 60 inches.
Types
Bath towels and sheets come in a variety of fabrics. Silk makes a lightweight towel. Egyptian cotton is luxurious and heavy weight. Turkish cotton towels are known for their absorbency. Recently, bamboo has become very important in the bath towel and sheet market. Demand for bamboo has increased 5,000 percent since 2004. Bamboo is popular because it is an eco-friendly material and it makes soft luxurious towels and bath sheets.
Considerations
If you must choose between a bath towel and a bath sheet there are several things to consider. First, do you have a towel rack large enough and strong enough to support a wet bath sheet? Standard towel bars may be too narrow. Second, if you are the type of person who wants everything to match perfectly, standard bath sets usually only come with towels and not bath sheets. You may not be able to find an exact match in a bath sheet. Cost is another consideration. The price of both bath towels and sheets can vary greatly depending on the material used, the quality of workmanship and even the brand label. The average price of a bath towel is $20, while the average price of a bath sheet is $42.
Benefits
Both bath towels and bath sheets have benefits. A towel fits on standard towel bars, and come in matched sets with other bathroom accessories. Bath sheets are large enough to easily wrap around your body. Taller people may prefer the extra length and width of bath sheets. Because of their extra surface area and absorption they are also great for use at the beach or pool.
