Remove and replace wallboard yourself.
Covering wall studs with wallboard creates a smooth wall in a room. Wallboard, known as gypsum board or drywall is a paper-covered, gypsum core construction material. Typically, homeowners paint or apply wallpaper over wallboard to decorate the room. Homeowners may have a variety of reasons for wanting to remove wallboard. Do-it-yourselfers may want to create a larger living space by opening the wall between two rooms. Homeowners may choose to remove severely damaged wallboard rather than repair it. Water-soaked wallboard must be removed to prevent growth of mold and mildew or wall collapse.
Instructions
1. Remove as much furniture from the room as possible. Spread tarps over the floors and any remaining furniture. Tape tarps or thin plastic over the doors to prevent wallboard dust from spreading through the house.
2. Remove base or crown molding from the wall. Remove pictures and wall hangings from the wall and the walls bordering the area where you are removing the wallboard.
3. Locate plumbing pipes, duct work and electrical wires that may lie behind the wall, and avoid cutting where these lie. Find a wall stud with a stud-finder. Mark the position of the stud, then move along the wall to find the next stud. Mark the position of the stud. Measure and mark the halfway point between the two wall studs.
4. Cut an 8- to 10-inch hole beginning at the mark for the halfway point between two studs. Use a drywall saw to create the hole.
5. Insert a pry bar into the hole. Tug it forward to break and remove pieces of the drywall. Continue to break off pieces of the drywall with the pry bar until no drywall remains on the wall.
6. Pull the nails from the studs with a claw hammer or nail puller.
