Delaminating is when the top coat of plaster peels or cracks away from the base layer.
Delaminated plaster is when the thin top coat cracks and falls away from the brown coat of plaster underneath. This often occurs in older homes. The environment of an older home also can spur delaminated patches of plaster to appear. Repairing the plaster is a simple process. To do so, mix up some lime-plaster powder and smooth it over the plaster's damaged sections.
Instructions
1. Use a chisel to chip away loose particles or pieces of the delaminated plaster. Wipe the area with a damp rag to remove plaster dust from the area. Wear a dust mask and eye protection when removing the plaster remnants.
2. Coat the area to be repaired with a plaster bonding agent. Apply the bonding agent slightly beyond the delaminated portion of the plaster so that you can blend the seam between the patch and the original plaster. Allow the bonding agent to cure until it is dry. One coat usually is enough to provide proper adhesion.
3. Create a mixture of 50 percent Ready-mix plaster and 50 percent lime together in a bucket. Add in enough water to form a sticky paste. Mix the ingredients until they are free of lumps.
4. Smooth this mixture onto the damaged area of the wall using a smooth trowel. Spread the mixture across the damaged area and over half an inch of the surrounding area of original plaster on all sides. Smooth out the edges so that they blend in with the original surface.
5. Allow the plaster to cure for 24 hours. Sand the edges of the patch to blend the area with the original plaster. Allow the plaster to cure for an additional 24 hours before painting or hanging anything from the this spot on the wall.
