Use Rit Dye On Shearling

Shearling is the closely cropped pelt of a sheep or lamb.

Shearling is closely cropped wool from a sheep or lamb. You may have a piece of shearling you wish to dye a different color for decorative purposes or because the shearling is stained or in poor condition. Shearling is a light colored natural fiber that will readily absorb any Rit Dye color you choose.

Instructions

1. Soak the shearling in hot water until it is saturated with water.

2. Dissolve 1 package of Rit Dye powder in two cups of hot water.

3. Use 3 gallons of water to 1 package of dye powder and mix in an enamel pot. This amount will dye 1 pound of fabric. Adjust with the same ratio for larger pieces of shearling.

4. Uncrumple the skin and add it to dye bath so that it can move around freely.

5. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the dye pot after 5 minutes of dying. This gives a more even and intense color to the shearling.

6. Stir with a wooden stick for 10 to 30 minutes until the desired shade is achieved.

7. Rinse the shearling in warm water and use progressively cooler water until it runs clear. Hot water will cause wool items to shrink.

8. Wash shearling with mild soap and rinse in cool water.

9. Hang the shearling up to dry.
