Carib Cement
is the shortened name for the Caribbean Cement Co. Ltd., based in Rockfort, Kingston, Jamaica. Carib Cement is a producer of cement and associated products for use in Jamaica and for export around the world.
History
The idea of a cement company was first discussed as early as 1921 but did not come into fruition until 1952 after a shortage of cement imports from countries, including the United Kingdom, after World War II. The company was formed because of the ability to sell cement cheaper than British imports.
Production
In 2009, Carib Cement produced 742,208 tons of clinker and 736,560 tons of cement. Subsidiary companies of Carib Cement include Jamaican Gypsum and Quarries Co., which produces gypsum for cement production; excess gypsum is exported.
Facts
Carib Cement has been used in around 90 percent of the structures built in Jamaica in 2011. The company employs around 300 people in Jamaica.
