Painted Plaster Wall
Plaster is commonly found in older homes, especially those built before 1950. This material, made from gypsum, water and sand, is used to make walls, ceilings and other architectural features. Though many builders now use drywall instead, some people still use plaster because of its sturdiness and unique look. If you have plaster walls in your home and are worried about paint them, relax. Preparing plaster walls for painting is very simple, and can be completed in just a few days.
Instructions
1. Secure any loose or sagging sections of plaster to the structure by installing plaster washers anchored by drywall screws. The screws should extend through to the wooden lath.
2. Patch any cracks or holes with a plaster repair kit. Apply the repair mixture using a trowel, making sure to also fill any nail holes that are present.
3. Wait 24 hours to allow the patched areas to dry completely, then sand them until they are smooth and even.
4. Wash the wall using a bit of dish detergent, water and a clean rag. Dry the wall when you are done, or allow it to air dry before proceeding.
5. Apply a coat of oil-based primer. Water-based primer will be soaked up by the plaster too easily.
6. Use a roller to paint the walls using an oil based paint. Allow 24 hours for the first coat to dry, then apply a second coat if necessary.
