Technical Specifications Of Toggle Bolts

Ordinary bolts cannot be used in hollow walls

A toggle bolt, also known as a hollow wall anchor, is often used in drywall, the gypsum board that is used to construct interior walls in homes. Gypsum or drywall boards are typically about 1/2 in thickness with a hollow space behind, making it difficult to secure objects. A toggle bolt has two parts: a machine screw and a wing-shaped toggle with a spring. The wings secure the object fastened to the wall.

Material Components

Carbon steel brings added strength.

The toggle bolt is constructed of carbon steel with a zinc plating. The wing is made of AISI 1010 low-carbon steel, as are the 1/8- to 3/8-inch nuts. The 1/2-inch Trunion nut is composed of Zamac alloy.

Installation Specifications

Toggle bolts are specific in size down to the threads.

Toggle bolts come in various sizes between 1/8 inch up to 1/2 inch. To use them you will have to drill a hole from 3/8 inch to 1 1/4 inch in diameter. The wings that fit each anchor size range from 1 1/16 inch to 3 inches, respectively. The bolts have thread sizes in the range of 6-32 through 1/2-13. Specification charts at the point of purchase will usually be available.

Materials Used With Toggle Bolts

Toggle bolts make for better construction.

Toggle bolts are used to secure objects in wallboard, plaster and hollow concrete masonry.
