Palm trees grown in planters can be acclimated to summers in northern climates.
Gypsum is generally considered an all-purpose soil conditioner. Being a type of rock, it does not add any type of nutrients to the soil, but when added to clay-rich soil, helps to add needed drainage to the soil. Palm trees require more drainage than is possible with clay soil, which tends to act like a sponge when wet, holding water for as long as possible. Palm trees are used to a much sandier soil that drains better than clay can.
Instructions
1. Dig a hole where you intend to plant the palm tree that is at least twice as large as the pot that the palm tree came in from the nursery. Place this dirt into the wheelbarrow.
2. Remove from the dirt any clumps of grass or weeds, leaving behind just the soil. Add the gypsum to the soil in the wheelbarrow, and then use the garden hoe to break up and mix the clods of dirt with the gypsum. When the mixture has been adequately combined, you will notice that the clods of dirt no longer stick together when you pick them up with your hand.
3. Place some of the amended clay soil into the bottom of the hole, and then add 2 gallons of water to the bottom of the hole. If the nursery from which you purchased the palm tree suggested adding wood chips to the hole, do so at this time.
4. Place the palm tree in the hole, and then support it with stakes to prevent the tree from falling over. Fill the hole to halfway with more amended soil, and then use your fist to tightly pack the mixture down. Apply 2 to 3 gallons of water to the mixture after it has been packed down.
5. Dump the remainder of the amended soil into the hole to the desired height, and then water the area of the hole once again. This ensures that the root ball for the tree receives adequate water while it is acclimating during the first day or so of its being planted.
