A dirt sieve is a tool used to sort out debris from soil and soil amendments. You want clean soil when you are growing plants whose roots can be damaged or stunted by rocks and debris in the soil. Examples would be carrots or roses, where the roots must dig deep into the soil to produce the desired outcome. Sieves are also used to break down large clumps of soil when you want a fine loamy soil.
Instructions
1. Measure and cut the wire mesh to the length desired. Allow a 1-inch overlap on either end of the length.
2. Measure and mark two sections of the lumber to be 47 inches each. You want the lumber to be 1 inch shorter than the wire mesh width. Cut the lumber and set these pieces aside.
3. Measure and mark the mid-point of the remaining piece of lumber. Cut this board in half at the mark.
4. Line up the wood pieces so the two sections matching the width of the mesh are at the top and bottom of the other two pieces. Make the ends flush. Drill screws through the sides of the top and bottom pieces into the ends of the side pieces.
5. Lay the frame on a flat surface. Pull the mesh over the frame so that it overlaps the frame 1 inch on all sides.
6. Bend the mesh over the sides and staple it to the frame.
