Use a baby's feet to make long-lasting family treasures.
Parents keep mementos of different milestones in their child's life. A common baby memento is a footprint. To make a footprint at home, you need little more than some plaster of Paris and a mold to pour it into. Added decorations, such as painted details or glass beads, can be added for additional personal flair. The finished product is something Mom and Dad can treasure for years to come.
Instructions
1. Follow the directions on a package of plaster of Paris. Mix the plaster in a plastic, disposable bowl or cup. The amount you need depends on the size you want the finished product. Leave the plaster to sit for five minutes. During this time, it thickens to a texture similar to pancake batter.
2. Place a mold onto a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil. The pan and foil limits potential messes. For a mold, use any container in the shape you want the finished product. For example, a large cookie cutter in the shape of a heart, a disposable pie pan or a square plastic storage container. Coat the inside of the mold with liquid hand soap or cooking spray. This acts as a mold release.
3. Pour the plaster of Paris into the mold.
4. Press your baby's foot or both feet into the center of the plaster of Paris. Keep the foot still in the plaster for 20 to 30 seconds. Remove your baby's foot and wash it under running water with soap.
5. Write your baby's name and the date in the plaster of Paris, using your finger.
6. Leave the plaster of Paris to set overnight.
