Fresh paint Wall Panelling Like Sheetrock

A paint roller on an extension pole applies paint quickly and smoothly to wall panels.

Sheetrock, a brand of drywall paneling manufactured by USG Corporation, is made from compressed gypsum particles and covered with thick, resilient paper. The paper surface produces a smooth interior wall surface that you may paint to suit your room design. These wall panels offer an optimal surface for painting, and with some basic painting tools, you can change the look and feel of your entire room, with a new coat of paint.

Instructions

1. Prepare new wall panels by wiping them down with a tack cloth to remove residual dust left behind from sanding the drywall joints.

2. Fill the paint roller pan about half-full with primer. If the panels are new, you can use latex primer, but if you're painting over old paint or the panels are stained, use a sealing primer to prevent the old color and stains from bleeding through.

3. Roll an even coat of primer over the wall panels, painting within a couple of inches of the adjoining walls and ceiling, taking care not to bump them with the roller. Don't press the roller into the wall--use only enough pressure to roll smoothly to avoid runs.

4. Cut in around the edges of the wall with a paint brush, holding the brush near the base of the handle and using only enough pressure to slightly bend the bristles. Dip the brush halfway into the paint can and tap the brush on the side of the can to remove the excess before painting.

5. Let the primer coat dry before applying the paint. Thoroughly clean the pan, brushes and roller and allow them to dry.

6. Roll on an even coat of paint in the same way you applied the primer. Start at an upper corner and work your way down to the bottom of the wall. Continue painting from top to bottom as you move across the wall. Vary the angle of the roller strokes for even coverage.

7. Paint the edges of the wall with the brush, taking care not to brush the ceiling. If your hand is unsteady, use an edge-painting pad that applies paint in a straight line.

8. Let the first coat of paint dry before applying a second coat. If you're painting over a dark paint with a light color, you may have to use three or more coats for complete coverage.
