Gypsum Safety

Gypsum improves soil.

Gypsum, which is composed of the element calcium sulfate, is used to improve soil quality for lawns and gardens. While relatively safe, gypsum does require certain safety precautions during application.

Identification

A white or nearly white solid, gypsum is odorless and is often ground up into powder for easy application. This also makes it a potential inhalation hazard.

Funtion

Aside from enriching soil with both calcium and sulfur, which are two necessary elements for plant growth, gypsum also loosens tough, compacted soil, particularly stubborn clay patches.

Features

Gypsum is nontoxic and won't affect the soil's pH balance.

Warning

While nontoxic, gypsum can still cause severe irritation if inhaled or ingested. Allowing gypsum to contact the eyes or skin may also cause discomfort.

Effects

If ingested, gypsum can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Contact with the eyes may cause burning, redness, and tearing. Skin contact may also lead to dermatitis, including redness and itching.

Solution

If contacting gypsum triggers a physical reaction, flush the exposed area with lukewarm water for five minutes. If irritation persists, contact a doctor for medical assistance. Wearing gloves and safety goggles can eliminate most of the risks associated with using gypsum.
