Alternative Ways To Use Synthetic Gypsum

Synthetic gypsum is produced when coal-operated electrical power plants remove sulfur dioxide from the flue gases that are generated when coal is burnt. The flue gases are exposed to a mixture of hydrated lime and calcium sulfide, which captures the sulfur dioxide. The calcium sulfide is oxidized, centrifuged to remove water, and vacuum filtrated to form synthetic gypsum. Synthetic gypsum is used as cement in place of natural gypsum, thus conserving natural resources. There are other uses for synthetic gypsum.

Agricultural Uses

Synthetic gypsum is hydrated calcium sulfate, and is used as a calcium-rich soil amendment to replace limestone. It is relatively soluble in water and allows a quick release of calcium and sulfate ions in the soil solution. This reduces soil crusting and benefits the soil structure, especially in heavy clay soils. It does not raise the soil's pH, but it can relieve aluminum toxicity in acid soil by forming aluminum sulfate, which plants are unable to uptake. It also supplies calcium and sulfur for plant nutrition.

Soil Erosion Uses

Wallace et al (2008) reports that research has shown surface sealing in heavy clay soils caused water runoff because the water was unable to penetrate the soil. Clay can clog the surface pores and seal the soil's surface. Synthetic gypsum was applied to the soil, and it was found that it increased electrolyte concentration on the surface of the soil and caused clay to come out of suspension. The result was a greater penetration of water, and soil loss through runoff was reduced.

Drywall Panel Uses

Drywall panels are made of gypsum plaster that is pressed between two thick sheets of paper. These panels are used to make interior walls and ceilings. Synthetic gypsum is used in about 30 percent of drywall production, as a replacement for natural gypsum.
