Applying and finishing drywall tape is not only one of the most difficult parts of drywall installation, but also one of the most necessary. Drywall tape adheres to separate sheets of drywall, creates a strong bond and covers voids.
Function
Embedded in a layer of drywall joint compound, drywall tape creates a physical bond between adjacent sheets of drywall. Although the bond does not significantly contribute to the structural support of the drywall sheets, the bond reduces the movement and cracking of the sheets.
Significance
Drywall tape's most noticeable purpose is the concealment of gaps between adjacent sheets of drywall. Joint compound and drywall tape cover gaps to create a smooth, seamless connection between separate sheets of drywall.
Types
There are two types of drywall tape: paper tape and mesh tape. Whereas drywall finishers embed paper tape in a layer of wet joint compound, mesh tape adheres directly to the drywall's surface before receiving a coating of joint compound.
