Recycle Sheetrock

Recycle your old or unwanted Sheetrock.

Sheetrock, a brand name of drywall, is the main material used for interior walls in all types of construction. When it comes to dealing with Sheetrock waste, the best way to go is to recycle. Although it is made out of a naturally occurring mineral, gypsum, it can produce toxic gases when it ends up in a landfill. The unpleasant odor can be harmful. As a result, some recycling facilities do not accept Sheetrock. However, you should contact your local recycling centers to check if they take Sheetrock.

Instructions

1. Scan the Sheetrock you intend to recycle, making sure there are no nails, screws or any other foreign objects within it.

2. Verify the Sheetrock is not covered with lead paint. You only need to worry about this if your home was build before 1940. About 2/3 of these homes contain heavily leaded paint, unless renovated. Additionally, 1/2 of homes built from 1940 to 1960 (and some after) contain this type of paint. If you suspect that your home or Sheetrock may contain lead paint, get it tested. This can be done with a do-it-yourself kit, but the safest way is to hire a professional look into it.

3. Examine the Sheetrock to make sure it doesn't contain asbestos. You only need to worry about this if you have a home built prior to 1980. Most remodeling, renovation or demolition in homes built between about 1900 and 1980 that created dust most likely created asbestos dust on Sheetrock. If you fall into this category, have your home and Sheetrock examined by a professional.

4. Take your Sheetrock to the nearest waste-management facility that accepts Sheetrock for recycling.
