It is hard to beat the inexpensive price of drywall.
Wallboard generally is used interchangeably with the terms sheetrock and drywall. Wallboard is composed primarily of gypsum and is used to form walls in home construction. Wallboard was invented in 1916, was introduced in the 1934 World's Fair and became popular in the 1940's, fastly becoming a cheaper and quicker alternative to wall plastering. A majority of home construction in the United States uses a form of wallboard to construct walls.
Wall Plaster
Wall plaster brings elegance back to wall construction. Plaster and wallboard are both made up of gypsum, but plaster has been around much longer. Archeologists found plaster walls lining the pyramids of the Ancient Egyptians. Home decorators and designers discovered through the centuries that plaster on ceilings and walls decorate with ease when using paint molds and stencils.
Artists, such as Michelangelo painted murals on walls and ceilings that are viewed still in Italy. Wall plastering is dying out because it takes time to set, requires certain temperatures to work with and costs more to install.
Magnesium Oxide Board
The use of magnesium oxide boards in a hurricane zone reduces the chance of walls melting or mildewing in severe storms. Magnesium oxide board makes a fine substitute for wallboard. It is used in many applications including wall and ceiling sheets, fascias, soffits and underlayments.
Magnesium oxide comes from the Asian part of the world and is manufactured primarily in China. These boards are harder than drywall, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-combustible. They can be used indoors and out in damp locations. In addition, magnesium boards cut with a power saw and can be scored, snapped and also drilled like regular wallboard.
The board comes in different finishes and for those looking for greener construction methods the manufacturing of this board is environmentally-friendly. The costs of magnesium board depend on transportation costs since the boards are manufactured in Asia.
Tongue and Groove Paneling
Hammer in some tongue and groove paneling as another alternative to wallboard. Tongue and groove paneling gets away from sheet board altogether and goes back to wood. This type of paneling brings back to wall construction old-wood style hardwoods like solid oak, mahogany and maple.
Tongue and groove paneling can be affixed to wall studs or on plywood. If replacing, drywall furring strips need to be attached to the wall frame which is a labor-intensive process. Tongue and groove paneling adds a luxurious finish to walls and are a sound remodeling project, but paneling costs more in labor and the material and takes longer to install.
