Convert A Cord-less Drill Right Into A Screw Gun

A screwdriving bit is simply an adapter that replaces the drill bit for your cordless drill. Your regular drill bit has a cylindrical shank that inserts into the chuck. The screwdriver bit is similar except it has a ¼ inch hex shank which inserts into a bit holder which is placed in the drill shank. Premium S2 steel or high-grade, shock absorbing alloy steel is used for the best screw-driving bits. They can be brass plated for corrosion resistance and are available in various lengths and styles.

Instructions

1. Determine the type of screw you'd like to adapt your cordless drill for. Identify the head. The choices include slot, Phillips, Torx and others. Specific devices are available to set screws flush into gypsum and there is also a specific drywall screw setter.

2. Purchase the bit and bit holder from a hardware store. The bit will be determined by your choice of screw from Step 1. The bit holder will be determined by budget. Simple bit holders include magnetic holders which allow you to change bits quickly. The more expensive the bit holder the harder the steel is likely to be, and the harder it will be to break.

3. Determine if you need an add-on. If you will be screwing in an awkward or tight spot, flexible extension bit holders are available. They extend the screwdriver head from the body of the drill, reducing bulk. They can come in lengths up to 11 inches and can be used for screwing around corners.

4. Insert the bit holder into the chuck and, depending on your type of chuck, either tighten by hand or use the chuck tightener.

5. Insert the bit into the bit holder. It will snap into place. The end result is that the cordless drill should resemble a cordless screw gun--with the screw bit replacing the drill bit.
