Every winter, homeowners buy and apply ice-melt products to keep their sidewalks and driveways safe. The choices are between urea and salt, crystals and liquids. These products eliminate the ice problem, but can spell trouble for the lawn. Most ice melts have a high pH level, and this burns the lawn, killing the grass. The damage is not permanent and is easy to repair. Gypsum helps reverse the damage because it has two ingredients, calcium and sulfur, that help neutralize the soil.
Instructions
1. Flush the affected areas with water. Make sure the soil receives at least 2 inches of water over a two- to three-hour period. Repeat the watering again in three days.
2. Sprinkle some gypsum over the area. Water the area so the gypsum penetrates the soil. If some of the grass is alive, this should turn it back to its original color.
3. Reseed the area with grass seed. Water the newly seeded area twice a day until the grass begins to grow. Slowly taper off as it becomes established.
