Gifts Produced From Container Ceiling Tiles

Ceiling tiles

Create a beautiful work of art out of an old or new tin ceiling tile and give it to someone you love. Ceiling tiles can be simple and unadorned, or they can be covered in elaborate filigrees, scrolls, medallions and vines. Re-purposing tin ceiling tiles is also one way to go green, if you're using salvaged tin tiles from torn down homes and offices.

Tin Tile Stamps

Find a tin ceiling tile with an elaborate design. Glue a small wooden block to the back of it, which will serve as a handle. Paint a thin coat of rust-colored or another earth tone shade of acrylic paint onto the raised features on the front of the tile. Place the tile face down lightly on a piece of scrap paper, to remove excess paint. Next, gently press the tile onto the surface of a sheet of handmade paper, available at art supply stores. Choose bark paper, or papers that have dried rose petals or grasses mixed into the fibers. When it's dry, put it inside a glass or clear acrylic frame and present it as a gift.

Vintage Wall Art

For the antique or shabby chic lover in your life, find vintage tin tiles that are encrusted with old, chipped layers of paint, and turn them into wall art. Buy a set of three to create a triptych. Attach hooks on the back of them so they can be hung right away. Or, purchase an antique tile medallion and present it as a gift to be hung on the wall, or propped on a table easel. Tin tile medallions are used as center or corner pieces of a tin ceiling, and they often have intricately designed borders, surrounding a circular center design.

Picture Frame

Create an attractive frame for a mirror, piece of artwork or photograph with a tin ceiling tile. Use tin snips to cut out a rectangular or square center, and wear some thick gloves to avoid getting a cut. Sand the edges smooth with a metal file, then attach your photo, mirror or artwork to the back of the tile. Another possibility for a tin tile frame is to paint the raised areas around the tile border with acrylic paint. Choose a metallic paint in a dark gold or copper color, to create contrast.

Planter Box

Make a small planter box out of tin ceiling tiles. Find strips of tin ceiling tile borders, and cut four pieces from it. Make them 1/2 inch smaller than the box. Use an epoxy glue to attach the pieces to each side of the planter box. Or, make a larger planter box that's exactly the size of four tin ceiling tiles. Attach them to the each side with epoxy glue, or use nails. Before presenting it as a gift, place a flowering plant inside.
