According to Bowling Green State University's Department of American Culture Studies, the Homestead Strike took place between June and November 1892. The strike pitted the workers and management of the Carnegie Steel Company mill in Homestead, Pennsylvania, against each other.
History
The PBS website reports the Homestead mill, 7 miles east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was due to have its workers' contract renewed on June 30, 1892. Between 1890 and early 1892, the price of rolled steel products declined significantly, giving the management of Carnegie the opportunity to negotiate its workers' contracts at reduced wages.
Workers
PBS reports that on June 25, 1892, the management of Carnegie, headed by Henry Clay Frick, ended contract negotiations and locked out the workers on June 30. The Amalgamated Union had conceded to almost all the demands of the management apart from the disbanding of the union.

Henry Clay Frick was well known for his antiunion beliefs and used any means available to break the strike, including the use of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which became involved in a fierce gun battle that resulted in the deaths of 10 men. The strike ended on November 17, 1892, with day laborers and mechanics returning to work; many union members were blacklisted from returning to work at Carnegie.
