The black eye susan is one of the few plants that can tolorate a clay rich soil.
Clay soil, by nature, is highly acidic. Limestone can be added to acidic soil to bring up the pH. Limestone also adds nutrients--such as calcium and magnesium--to the soil. These nutrients are essential for lawn and plant growth. Lime can be added twice a year to raise the pH in a relatively short period. Purchase a finely-ground dolomitic lime. The smaller the lime granules, the faster the lime can take effect. The best time to lime your soil is in the fall. If you need to do two applications, do one in the spring and one in the fall.
Instructions
1. Turn over the soil using the garden tiller.
2. Break up any large clumps of earth or clay by hitting them with the side of the garden rake. Rake the area to level out the soil.
3. Fill the garden spreader with the granulated limestone. Push the spreader across the soil in a horizontal direction. After you have spread the limestone in a horizontal direction, change and begin to move in a vertical direction across the soil.
4. Mix the soil and lime with a garden rake. Be sure to work the limestone 4 to 6 inches down into the soil.
