Use curtains to cover plaster walls you find unsightly.
Plaster and lath walls are a common feature in older homes. While plaster can add charm to a room, the look is not for everyone -- especially if the walls are in poor condition. If you are renting or if you have not yet decided whether to repair or replace, learn easy ways to cover plaster and lath walls without removing or damaging them.
Instructions
1. Hang floor-to-ceiling curtains. Install the curtains over the plaster to create a backdrop that energizes the room. Cool curtains behind a couch in a contrasting color set it off. Use them in lieu of a headboard or to add romance to a dining room.
2. Set up a folding screen. Shop for a decorative screen in a bold color or build a simple one yourself with supplies from a home construction outlet. Set up the screen in front of the wall and add a pendant lamp and accent chairs to create an intimate, well-designed seating area.
3. Combine shelving with framed art. Use chest-high bookshelves painted or stained in colors that enhance your room design. Place large art pieces of the same size on top of the shelves and lean them against the wall. Leaning the artwork is an easy solution if your plaster and lath wall is too fragile to support the weight of hanging pieces directly on them.
4. Hang wallpaper. Use temporary wallpaper if you are a renter or want to avoid the mess of wallpaper paste. Wall decals are an even easier solution if you only need to cover damaged areas of the plaster.
