A lot of people are wary of their private lives, and thus they do not want neighbors to be disturbed by their home theater system or band practice noises. The solution to this is soundproofing a room, which involves noise reduction and noise absorption. The former is about stopping the outside noise from getting inside the room. The latter maintains the sound inside the room instead of the sound waves reflecting on the interior materials, creating echoes and reverberations.
Instructions
For New and Existing Walls
1. Fasten the furring strips on to the wall using the 2 ½-inch coarse drywall screws and connect it with the wall assembly. Place the Sound insulation sheets on top of the furring strips using a roofing Nail Gun armed with the 1 ¼-inch nails.
2. With a nail gun and the 1 ¼-inch nails, install the sound insulation sheets for sound blocking on the stud framing. Seal all the gaps by using the acoustic sealant. The Quiet Barrier tape must be applied on seams to make sure that there is no space left open for sound waves to pass through.
3. Put the gypsum board or drywall on top of the sound insulation sheets installed on the stud framing. Use the 2 ½-inch coarse drywall screws to assure installation of the drywall. Leave a space of at least ¼ inch on the area for the new wall. Use the acoustic sealant if there are still gaps to seal on the frame and for electrical outlets. This leaves you with soundproof walls.
For Floors
4. Clean the area before installing any of the carpet underlayment materials. It must be dry and nothing must stick out on the whole spot where the materials will be placed.
5. Prior to installing the multifunction carpet underlayment, it must be given time to adjust to the room temperature for at least 24 hours.
6. Position the multifunction carpet underlayment fiber-side down. The seams should not be within or in front of over used doorways.
7. Unroll the first carpet underlayment on the corner side of the room. Leave a ¼ inch between the tack strip and the staggered seams for retrenchment and extension.
8. Spread out another sheet right beside the first one. Be sure to tape the seams with high-quality duct tape. It has to be fastened tightly together for the entire distance of the room. Complete the row before proceeding to the next one.
9. To carry one with the next row, cut the multifunction carpet underlayment sheet in half using the utility knife and straight edge. This means that you are to install half of the sheet on the second row following the instructions on Step 5. Install with staggered seams, butt it tightly and then tape it.
10. Finish the whole floor doing all the step-by-step instructions. Then install the carpet of your choosing to complete the whole floor.
