A toggle wing, or toggle wing bolt, is a type of fastener designed for use in wallboard and other hollow materials. A toggle wing consists of a machine screw and two sheet-metal wings that are held in the open position by a metal spring.
Installation
Installing toggle wing bolts involves drilling a hole in the base material, inserting the bolt far enough that the wings spring open and tightening with a screwdriver. The load capacity of toggle wing bolts varies according to the anchor size and the type and thickness of base material to which the bolt is attached.
Load Capacity
Based on testing conducted according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard E4888, a 1/8-inch anchor installed in 3/8-inch gypsum wallboard typically has a load capacity between 150 and 180 lbs. A half-inch anchor installed in 3/4-inch wallboard has a load capacity between 555 and 600 lbs.
Disadvantages
Toggle wings bolts require a large hole so that the wings can pass through the base material. Another disadvantage is that the wing fastener assembly falls into the hollow wall cavity when the bolt is removed.
