Silver crystals
Silver crystals are metal crystals that can be grown easily by children (under supervision) and adults. Growing silver crystals makes for a rewarding science project, too. Small crystals can be grown instantly and larger ones can be grown overnight or over the course of a couple of days. A test tube and a few other supplies are all that is needed. There are two methods for creating silver crystals.
Instructions
Copper Wire and Silver Nitrate
1. Fill your test tube with 0.1m of liquid nitrate. Place the test tube in the test tube stand so the liquid nitrate does not spill out.
2. Copper coil
Cut a piece of copper wire and place the wire into the test tube. Coiling the copper wire will give you a greater surface area. This will give you more growth.
3. Let the test tube stand for about an hour. Around this time, crystals will become visible to the naked eye.
4. Let stand overnight for much larger crystals to form.
Mercury and Silver Nitrate
5. Place a drop of mercury in a clean test tube using a dropper. Place your test tube in the test tube stand to prevent spills.
6. Add about 5 to 10ml of 0.1m silver nitrate.
7. Let the test tube stand in the dark for one to two days undisturbed. You will begin to see the crystals form on the surface of the mercury.
