Do Insulation For Tile

Like any type of wall or floor covering, tile can benefit from some insulation. When tile is insulated, less air is likely to leak through the tiled wall or floor surface, which helps maintain the indoor temperatures of your home more effectively. If you want to insulate a wall or floor before installing tile, you must do so in a way that still provides a solid, even surface on which to install the tile. Backerboards make this possible.

Instructions

1. Install a vapor barrier over the drywall or the subfloor on which you intend to install the backerboard. Follow the instructions provided with the vapor barrier for the proper installation. In general, tape the barrier to the floor or wall, using the tape product recommended by the barrier's manufacturer, and seal the seams with the recommended caulk or sealant.

2. Measure the height of the wall or length of the floor. Cut pieces of the backerboard down to the height of the wall or the length of the floor with a razor knife.

3. Spread thinset mortar on the wall or floor at one edge and place the first piece of backerboard into the mortar. Further secure the backerboard to the wall or floor by driving backerboard screws through the backerboard and into the wall studs or floor joists every 8 inches down the stud or joist. Drill the screws in until they sit even with the wall surface to avoid damage to the backerboard surface.
