Install An Osb

Install an OSB

OSB (oriented strand board) is a composite wood product that's not quite as strong as plywood but tends to be harder and flatter. Sawdust and strips or strands of wood are pressed together with glue to manufacture OSB boards, generally in 8-by-4-foot sheets. OSB is an ideal underlayment for carpeting, and it also works well as a base for vinyl tile. It isn't ideal for hard tiles and won't hold flooring nails well.

Instructions

1. Clean the subfloor thoroughly. Let it dry for at least 48 hours.

2. Spread carpenter's glue over the back of a full sheet of OSB, running the beads of glue in close-set squiggly lines within about 1 inch of the ends of the board. Press the board onto the floor in one corner of the room, with its length positioned perpendicular to the lengths of the plywood pieces in the subfloor.

3. Secure the OSB by sinking screws every foot with a screwgun.

4. Repeat the process for the next board, running it lengthwise off the end of the first board. Continue with additional boards until you reach other opposite wall. Cut the final board to fit, using a circular saw.

5. Lay additional courses of OSB next to the first course, gluing the boards and screwing them down as before. Stagger the positions of the boards from row to row so they don't line up. Make sure the seams between the OSB don't fall in the same places as the seams of the underlying subfloor.

6. Cover the whole floor in OSB, cutting the final course lengthwise as necessary to fit. The floor in now ready for top-flooring.
