Vail: It's a word synonymous with world-class skiing and luxury. In the winter, it’s a haven for skiers, boasting the largest ski resort in the United States. In the summer, it hosts the largest farmer’s market in Colorado each weekend, as well as outdoor recreation from hiking to rafting. Year-round, visitors to Vail enjoy sunny weather and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.Sound expensive? It is. But you don't have to spend a fortune to visit Vail--you just need to know some insider secrets.
Instructions
1. Visit Vail in the off-season to save the most money. You'll find the cheapest accommodations in the periods between ski season and summer, generally mid-April through late May and mid-September through mid-November.
2. Avoid high-demand times such as Thanksgiving, Christmas through New Year's, President's Day, Spring Break and the Fourth of July.
3. Research budget lodging in the area online. Budget options in Vail Village are virtually non-existent, but look for nearby but cheaper areas such as West Vail and Avon.
4. Research discounted lift tickets before you travel if you're planning to ski. You will always pay top dollar at the ticket window, so save money by looking for lodging/lift ticket packages or other deals.
5. Avoid eating meals out. There is a Safeway grocery store in Vail, where you can stock up on breakfast, lunch and dinner items, as well as snacks for your time on the mountain or exploring the town.
6. Use public transportation. Parking in Vail is notoriously expensive and difficult to find, so save time and money by using the free buses throughout town.
