Cut Gypsum Block

Gypsum is a type of drywall. Gypsum block is made of plaster and chopped pieces of fiberglass mixed with water. The material is then poured into molds so the blocks can be formed. The blocks are also produced with tongues and grooves for easier installation. They are constructed to form a wall. When you are forming a wall with these blocks, it may become necessary to cut the blocks to size. Cutting gypsum block is similar to cutting regular drywall, but because of its thickness it can take a lot more time.

Instructions

1. Lay the gypsum block down on a flat surface. Measure and mark the gypsum block where it will need to be cut. Push the metal edge of the tape measure into the block at the desired cut location and slide it carefully up the gypsum block to mark where the cut will be made along the entire piece.

2. Turn the gypsum block on edge so it is standing up and line up a hack saw at the mark you made with the tape measure. Hold the block up with your non-dominant hand and grip the hack saw in your dominant hand.

3. Saw carefully back and forth along the mark. Move the blade in smooth, even strokes. Push down firmly on the gypsum block and allow the saw to push right through it. Continue sawing until the hack saw has cut the gypsum block into two pieces.

4. Measure the gypsum block and verify the proper size piece was cut and repeat the process for any other pieces that need to be cut.
