Much roofing work is done when the weather is clear.
Roofers install, maintain and repair roofs using asphalt, tar, gravel, rubber, metal and shingles. They must be unafraid of heights and require sure footing on sloped surfaces. Many learn their trade while helping experienced roofers, though formal three-year apprenticeships are also available. The work involves heavy lifting, climbing, bending and kneeling in different types of weather.
Salaries
Roofers make a base hourly rate of $12.42 to $20.21, with overtime of $17.81 to $27.15, according to a PayScale.com report as of January 2011. However, with annual bonuses of $237 to $1,536 and profit sharing of $200 to $15,000, total annual compensation can rise to $27,698 to $46,538.
Experience
Greater experience means more experience in developing solutions to a wider variety of roofing problems. Thus, more years means higher hourly rates for roofers. For example, new workers make $8 to $11.25 an hour, while those with one to four years of work get $10.72 to $15.80. At five to nine years of experience, they earn $12.36 to $19.54, and at 10 to 19 years, $14.60 to $22.82. Finally, with 20 or more years under their belts, they are paid $16.02 to $24.60.
Industry
Compensation can vary by industry because it defines duties and responsibilities. For example, those working for residential home construction deal primarily with pitched roofs and earn $13.21 to $17.27 per hour. Those in commercial construction handle flat roofs and make $15.24 to $23.86. Those with general contractors may have additional skills beyond roofing such as carpentry or foundation work. They show the widest and highest salary ranges at $12.21 to $24.57.
Location
Salary varies by location, with those in Illinois earning the widest and highest ranges at $13.76 to $27.87 per hour. Roofers in New York earn $13.76 to $21.83, while those in California make $15.19 to $25.56. As for cities, Chicago boasts the widest and highest wages at $22.50 to $37.64 per hour, followed by Seattle, at $16.18 to $27.25. Salaries in Houston are at $10.81 to $20.35, while in Cleveland earnings are at $13.76 to $17.85.
