Hang pictures and light-weight shelves on drywall with sleeve wall anchors.
If your walls are constructed from drywall, you can't hang pictures using simple nails. Drywall panels are composed of pressed gypsum that forms a solid, but crumbly, interior that can erode away if you hang pictures on regular nails and screws. Drywall sleeve anchors grasp the interior of the panel to hold the hangers securely, allowing you to hang even heavier objects such as mirrors or shelves. Drywall anchor sets include expanding plastic sleeves and appropriate screws that you will insert into the sleeves.
Instructions
1. Attach a bit to your drill that has the same diameter as the outside of the plastic sleeve. The wall anchor package should state the size of bit you'll need.
2. Drill a hole where you want to install the drywall anchor. Stop when your bit reaches the same depth as your anchor is long. For example, if your drywall anchors are 1 inch long, you'll drill the hole exactly 1 inch deep.
3. Position the plastic sleeve into the hole and tap it lightly with the hammer to drive it into place. When the rim of the plastic anchor is flush with the wall, you've installed the anchor correctly.
4. Insert the metal screw into the plastic sleeve. You can use your drill or you can use a regular hand-held screwdriver. The sides of the sleeve will expand slightly as you insert the screw that will grasp the drywall.
5. Stop when the head of the screw is about 1/8 inch from the wall so you can hang a picture or mirror by a wire. For shelving brackets, insert an anchor for every hole on each bracket.
