Mold & Mildew Resistant Sheetrock

Mold-resistant sheetrock could be a good choice for a bathroom, where high humidity is the norm.

Sheetrock, or drywall, is a building material that usually consists of a layer of gypsum faced on both sides with paper. It comes in 4-foot-by-8-foot sheets and is used to finish walls and ceilings. A carpenter hangs the drywall by screwing the sheets onto the interior frame of the building. The joints are filled with a plaster-like substance called joint compound, sanded, primed, and painted.

Remediation of Moldy Sheetrock

The remediation of moldy drywall is very difficult; often cleaning is not enough, and the drywall must be removed and replaced.

Food for Mold

Mold and mildew resistant drywall uses chemically-treated paper, or the gypsum is faced with fiberglass instead of paper. The surface of the fiberglass-coated drywall is inorganic and therefore does not provide a food source for mold.

Expense

Mildew and mold resistant drywall is substantially more expensive than regular drywall.

Not Mold Proof

Mold resistant is not mold proof. These products are mold-resistant, not mold-proof.

More Measures Needed

Avoiding the growth of mold in a building requires more than just using mold-resistant drywall. It is also necessary to control humidity and exposure to moisture.

Limitations

The manufacturer of mold-resistant drywall can specify limitations, such as the temperature and humidity at which the product should be used, that could make it unsuitable for areas where you might expect to use it, such as bathrooms. Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully to make sure the product meets your needs.
