Install Bath tub Wall

Make sure you have cement board beneath your bathroom wall tiles.

The walls around your bathtub can be finished in ceramic, marble, glass or even wood. Whatever you're planning to put on those walls, what's under that surface should be cement board. Cement board looks like drywall, but it's harder and it's moisture-proof. This makes it the ideal backing for ``wet'' areas such as the bathroom. The boards come in 5-by-4-foot sheets, and can be installed either over bare studs or on top of existing drywall. If you're installing over drywall, add a studfinder to your list so you'll be able to affix the boards to the studs.

Instructions

1. Measure from one side of the wall behind the bathtub, over to the last stud that's within five feet. Transfer the measurement to a piece of cement board, using a level to make a line straight across the shorter (4-foot) side of the board.

2. Cut the board with your jigsaw. Cut out any necessary holes for wall fixtures.

3. Hold the cut sheet in place with the cut side facing the corner and the factory edge lined up along the middle of the stud edge. The bottom horizontal edge of the board should meet the top rim of the tub. Drive in drywall screws every 6 inches along every stud behind the board.

4. Repeat, measuring and cutting boards for the rest of the wall. Hang the boards in courses, making sure there are no four-way intersections. All the cut sides should be in the corners, not on the flat part of the wall. Cover all the walls behind the tub.

5. Press drywall tape along each seam between the cement boards. Spread a smooth coat of thinset mortar over the tape. Let it dry overnight. Sand it lightly with your sanding pad. The wall is ready for tiles or other wall coverings.
