What Type Of Drywall To Make Use Of Over A Shower

Builders use drywall, sometimes called gypsum board, sheetrock or plasterboard, for interior wall finishing in many parts of the home including the bathroom. However, wet environments like bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens require specialized drywall materials and techniques. Using drywall not designed for wet environments can result in drywall that swells or breaks apart due to the moisture inherent to a bathroom.

Moisture Resistant

Moisture resistant drywall is marketed under various names including MR and WR for moisture and water resistance as well as green or blue board. These materials are not waterproof but water resistant. They can withstand occasional splattering of water and high humidity but not continuous exposure to water. The paper face of the drywall is commonly green to differentiate it from standard drywall.

Thickness

Builders commonly use 1/2 inch drywall in home applications. In some cases, ceiling panel drywall is ideal. These sheets are more rigid and less prone to sagging. If available, use moisture resistant ceiling sheets. However, the moisture resistant qualities are the most important.

Fasteners

Green boards stay in place with 1 1/4- to 1 1/2-inch drywall screws, the same as standard drywall boards. Figure about a half-pound of screws for every five sheets of drywall planned. Apply tape and drywall compound to seams and compound to all screw holes following the same procedures as with standard drywall. Sand the drywall compound and reapply to create a smooth finish.

Finishes

Green board accepts the same finishes as standard drywall. You can paint, texture or wallpaper as desired. While not necessarily applicable to a ceiling project, moisture resistant drywall is also common as a backing material for tile applications. This is useful for bathroom and kitchen walls.
