Properly Set Up A Smoke Detector On Lathe & Plaster Roofs

Replace batteries and test the operation of all your smoke detectors at least once a year.

Compared to conventional drywall, lathe and plaster offers better soundproofing as well as long life. Plaster's thick walls also offer more protection against fire. Putting up a smoke detector on lathe and plaster ceilings offers no more work than on drywall ceilings. With a few tools, you can secure your smoke detector in place and ensure your household safety.

Instructions

1. Set your ladder to allow yourself adequate movement and balance. Make sure any and all folding parts are fully extended and locked in place before putting any weight on your ladder.

2. Position your smoke detector base plate against the ceiling at your desired location. Mark the mounting holes as your smoke detector manual instructs, using either a pencil or the point of your scratch awl.

3. Drill holes at each mounting location. Do not push the drill too hard, or ceiling damage may result. Let the drill bit do the work.

4. Insert the two plastic wall anchors provided with your smoke detector into each hole, and lightly tap into place with your scratch awl handle.

5. Position your smoke detector base plate against the wall, line up the mounting holes with the anchor positions and secure using the two provided screws. Do not over-tighten and strip the screws.

6. Connect the battery and secure the smoke detector in place according to manufacturer instructions.
