USG Corporation, or the United States Gypsum Corporation, manufactures Sheetrock, which is a particular brand of gypsum panels, so popular that its name is commonly used to refer to gypsum panels. Once Sheetrock is installed, it can develop water stains from leaks or excessive moisture problems. One danger is that these conditions lead to the heightened problems of mold and mildew growing. When you encounter water-stained Sheetrock, the solution involves a two-pronged attack of elimination and cleaning.
Instructions
1. Locate and repair what caused the water stain. The cause could be a roof leak, a leaking pipe or window, or another cause. Repairing the cause ensures that no more water gets to the Sheetrock after you clean the stains.
2. Mix detergent and water in a bucket. Put on rubber gloves and eye protection. Dip a stiff brush into the mixture, and scrub the stained area of Sheetrock.
3. Inspect the scrubbed area to see if stubborn stains are still visible.
4. Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water in the bucket. Open a door or window, to allow adequate ventilation inside the room.
5. Dip the brush into the bleach and water mixture, and scrub the stain.
6. Rinse the scrubbed area with water, making sure that you don't soak the Sheetrock.
7. Allow the Sheetrock to dry, and look for any remaining stains. Scrub the stains with the bleach and water mixture, and rinse with water, if necessary.
