Drywall Tape
Definition
Drywall finishers embed drywall tape over the joints where drywall panels meet. First, they apply a coat of joint compound (often called mud). Then they lay a piece of tape over the joint and wipe it smooth with flat drywall knives.
Function
Drywall tape bonds with the drywall's paper surface. Properly finished, the taped joint will not be visible through paint.
Size
Drywall tape comes in large rolls, from 25 to 200 feet, depending on brand and type. Drywall finishers have tool-belt tape holders that allow them to dispense the tape on the go.
Types
Drywall joints that form an outside corner receive vinyl drywall tape. Drywall joints that form inside angles receive paper drywall tape. For plastering jobs, finishers use mesh drywall tape.
Features
Vinyl drywall tape creates sharp corners quickly and easily. It is an improvement on the old-fashioned method for doing odd angles, which required snapping chalk lines and applying multiple coats of joint compound.
Expert Insight
Many beginners use fiberglass-mesh drywall tape because they believe it is easier to work with. But this type of tape will only work with plaster, not joint compound. Use paper drywall tape with joint compound.
