Fresh paint Gypsum Walls

Gypsum is another word for drywall, which is the flat, chalk-like substance that comes in sheets. Painting gypsum is the same general process as painting a plaster wall, although the preparation is a little different. Gypsum walls have seams between the sheets that make up a wall. The seams have to be completely flat and smooth before you paint, or the paint will highlight them.

Instructions

1. Take all the furniture out of the room. Remove the socket plates and other obstructions with a screwdriver. Spread out tarps.

2. Run a drywall knife over drywall seams, knocking off any loose or raised material. Smooth over the seam with joint compound and the knife, filling any holes or low spots. Let it set overnight. Sand it lightly to get it flat.

3. Run smooth, unbroken beads of caulk along all the edges of the wall, in the corners by the ceiling and the floor and anywhere else where the wall meets another surface.

4. Brush primer around the edges of the wall, near the floor and ceiling trim and anywhere else you caulked, cutting in at the perimeter. Use a paint roller to prime the rest of the wall, applying it in overlapping vertical strokes. Make sure there are no ridges or drips. Let the primer dry overnight.

5. Cut in the edges of the wall with paint, using a brush along the caulk lines as before. Apply paint with a roller to the rest of the wall in vertical strokes. Keep the paint thin and even. Let it dry overnight.

6. Apply a second coat of paint in the same manner as the first. A third coat can be applied if the first two don't cover completely.
