Fix Metal Edged Drywall

Drywall corners consist of a lightweight, rounded metal strip that rests over the wood at a junction between two walls. This helps protect the corner from damage and offers a good clean edge regardless of the wood shape beneath. This is not a perfect solution, however, as they can be easily dented or damaged by simple household objects like vacuum cleaners. Some damage requires replacement of the metal, but in most cases simple reshaping will suffice.

Instructions

1. Cut away the drywall compound around the damaged piece of metal with a utility knife or other sharp instrument. Wipe away any drywall dust to see the damaged area clearly.

2. Use an inverted bolt or other hard metal object with a flat point to lightly hammer the metal drywall corner piece back into its approximate original shape. This will likely take many light taps and moving the piece of metal around to shape it without damaging the rest of the wall or more of the metal corner.

3. Tap a few small finishing nails into the metal to anchor the piece to the board beneath. The force of reshaping the metal will likely have loosened it or pulled it away slightly from the corner.

4. Use a putty knife to apply a thin layer of drywall compound over the metal on one side. If necessary, use a small piece of joint tape at the edge of the metal to aid in hiding the seam. Smooth the drywall compound back along the wall, feathering it out away from the corner. After this sets for a short time, apply another coat, this time drawing the drywall compound out over the metal through the corner. Let dry.

5. Sand the area lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper and check for smoothness and good coverage. Avoid sanding the corner edge at this point; instead focus mainly on the wall itself. Add more joint compound, alternating the two directions and then sanding until you are happy with the result. Move to the other side of the corner and do the same things there.

6. Draw sandpaper carefully along the corner point to sand and shape the corner to match the rest of the edge. This will take some time, and you might need to add compound to get the desired result.
